Troop 42 was formed in January of 1934.  The sponsoring institution is not known, but the troop was located in the lower Greenville Avenue area.  The first Scoutmaster was Mr. C. L. Doss. He served as Scoutmaster until 1936.

SCOUTMASTERS

In 1936 Riggs Presbyterian Church sponsored the troop, and Mr. W. R. “Pop” Churchill became the Scoutmaster.  “Pop” served over 50 years in the scout program.  During the time “Pop” was Scoutmaster the troop grew to a total of 72 registered scouts.  “Pop” served as Scoutmaster until 1947.

Riggs Presbyterian Church was later to become St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, which is the troops current sponsor.

From 1947 until 1973, the troop had numerous Scoutmasters.  They are:  1947 to 1950, Mr. George Germond Jr. 1950 to 1956, Mr. Kingsland Arnold 1956 to 1958, Mr. Joe Mathews 1958, Mr. Harold Dry, and Mr. W. W. Schaeffer 1959 to 1963, Mr. Robert A Johnson Jr. 1963 to 1969, Mr. C. G. Hudson Jr. 1969 to 1972, Mr. Richard Meier, and 1972, Mr. A. J. Adams Jr.

In 1973, Mr. D. Charles Chapman took over as Scoutmaster and served until 1980.  Since that time Mr. Chapman has served as a Committee Member.  We lost Mr. Chapman in 1997.

Mr. Harry L. Bubeck joined Troop 42 as a boy in 1973. He had served as Advisor for Post 709 prior to becoming Scoutmaster in 1980.  He served until 1992, to become the Mikanakawa Lodge Adviser of the Circle Ten Council.  He currently serves as Troop Committee Co-Chairman.

Mr. Homer Canada joined Troop 42 as Assistant Scoutmaster in 1985.  He has served as Cub Master of Pack 325 prior joining the troop.  He became Scoutmaster in 1992.

In 1995, Mr. Carlos Vielma became Scoutmaster.  Mr. Vielma joined the troop in 1982 as a boy.  A veteran of Philmont, he served as Patrol Leader at the 1985 National Scout Jamboree, and attended five summer camps with the troop.  Mr. Vielma is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow.

In June of 1996, DeYo Leonard became Scoutmaster.  An Eagle Scout out of Troop 64, he served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader at the 1989 National Scout Jamboree and is a veteran of Philmont.  Mr. Leonard is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow.

In April of 2000, Brian Bennett became Scoutmaster.  An Eagle Scout, he served as Lodge Chief of Mikanakawa Lodge in 1988-1989.  Mr. Bennett is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow.  Mr. Bennett has served as Assistant Scoutmaster for many years.

In July of 2000, Gary Randall became Scoutmaster.  He was a longtime scouter with the Kansas City Boy Scout Council.  Gary moved away to Austin, Texas.

In May of 2001, Dr. Michael Holub became Scoutmaster.  He previously served as Assistant Scoutmaster.  Dr. Mike’s greatest legacy for Troop 42 is his support and encouragement to get the greatest number of adult leaders through Wood Badge training. Because of this commitment he has laid a solid foundation for the future Scoutmasters of Troop 42.  Dr. Mike now serves as Cubmaster for Pack 43 and Den Leader for his son’s den.  Dr. Mike has also rejoined Troop 42 as an adult leader.  Welcome back, Dr. Mike!

In October of 2005, Samuel Tates became Scoutmaster. He previously served as Assistant Scoutmaster. Sam has already seen many boys grow up in this troop including his own son, and become Eagle Scouts. Under Sam’s leadership and lots of help from our adult leaders we have had a record number of boys to make Eagle Rank in 2008 and 2009.  Thanks Mr. Tates !!

Matthew E. MacGregor (Matt) assumed the Scoutmaster duties in September of 2010. He was previously an Assistant Scoutmaster and has completed his Wood Badge Tickets. He was in the FOX patrol.  Matt served as Scoutmaster until December 2017.  During his tenure, 51 scouts earned their Eagle rank.  His leadership inspired not only the Troop 42 scouts, but the next generation of adult leaders as well. Matt passed away on Nov. 30, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  The pinnacle of Matt’s time in scouting was watching his youngest son, Trevlan, receive his Eagle Rank.

Vernon Hakes (Vern) assumed the Scoutmaster duties in December of 2018. He was previously an Assistant Scoutmaster and is Wood Badge trained. He’s currently the Assistant Lodge Advisor for Commtech in the Order of the Arrow and Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. He has 2 sons in the troop who have obtained Eagle and are also Vigil Members of the Order of the Arrow.

In January of 2021, Wesley S. Alost (Wes) assumed the role of Scoutmaster.  Wes previously served as a Den Leader and Cubmaster of Pack 325.  Wes is Wood Badge trained and has been an active adult leader in the Troop since 2015.  He is one of a small handful of Troop 42 members to earn the Grand Slam of High Adventure Award.  He was honored to become a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow in 2024.

In January of 2026, Dave Pratt took over as the Scoutmaster of Troop 42. Dave is an Eagle Scout and a former Philmont Ranger.

TROOP 42 GIRLS

Troop 42 Girls was chartered in April 2022 with 5 young ladies and Dr. Grace Davidson became the first Scoutmaster and is still presently serving as Scoutmaster. Dr. Davidson has been Chaplain and Committee member of Troop 42 since 2006. Her three sons are Eagle Scouts from Troop 42 and 2 of them are Vigil Honor members of the Order of the Arrow. Dr. Davidson is also a Vigil Honor member, served for 4 years as Associate Lodge Advisor for Program, serves as a Conclave Advisor for the Gateway Section and is the Wellness Coordinator for Mikanakawa Lodge. Dr. Davidson is a former Wood Badge Course Director/Scoutmaster and former NYLT Course Director/Scoutmaster.

TROOP 42 AS A FAMILY TROOP

As of January 1, 2026 Troop 42 is now a Family Unit, meaning that boys and girls will be together in one Troop, under the direction of the new Scoutmaster, Dave Pratt. 

TROOP COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN

In 1942, Mr. J. Cook Evans joined Troop 42.  Mr. Evans served as Post 42 Advisor, Troop Advancement Chairman, and in 1963 became Troop Committee Chairman.  Mr. Evans served Scouting for over 50 years, 46 of those years with Troop 42, until his death in 1986.  

After Mr. Evans death, Mr. Steve W. Jung, a long time Troop Committee Member, became the Chairman.  In 1996 former Scoutmaster Harry Bubeckbecame Chairman.  In 2000, Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Flagg joined Harry Bubeck and began sharing the duties of Chairman as the Co-Chairman and Advancement Chair.
